New VHV5 inline verifier from OMRON for real-time, ISO-compliant barcode quality control

OMRON has introduced the VHV5 inline verifier, a high-speed barcode verification system designed to verify 1D, 2D, and Direct Part Mark (DPM) codes directly on the production line. The VHV5 performs real-time verification of Code 128, Data Matrix, QR Codes, and DPM marks at speeds of up to 1,000 codes per minute, ensuring that every code applied during marking or printing is readable, compliant, and traceable.

In production and packaging environments, barcode quality directly affects traceability, compliance, and reliable scanning during internal handling, final assembly, distribution, and point-of-use. Inline verification enables manufacturers to evaluate code quality at the moment it is created, allowing printing or marking issues to be detected and corrected immediately.

The VHV5 is compliant with ISO/IEC 15416 for 1D barcode print quality, ISO/IEC 15415 for 2D symbol grading, and ISO/IEC TR 29158 (AIM DPM) for codes marked directly on parts using laser, dot peen, or inkjet processes. By applying these standards inline, the system delivers consistent and repeatable grading results across labels, packaging, and permanently marked components used in automotive, electronics, pharmaceutical, medical device, and general manufacturing applications.

Tilted coaxial lighting is used to improve verification accuracy on reflective, curved, and low-contrast surfaces by reducing glare and enhancing edge definition. This optical approach is particularly effective for DPM codes on metal parts, glossy labels, and curved plastic packaging commonly found in high-speed production lines.

To maintain grading accuracy in space-constrained installations and challenging viewing angles, the VHV5 applies unwarp transform technology to correct image distortion caused by curved or angled surfaces, enabling accurate axial non-uniformity grading of 2D codes. Flat field correction further ensures uniform illumination and pixel response across the entire field of view, preventing lighting artifacts from influencing grading results regardless of code position.

The system also includes built-in GS1 syntax checking to validate encoded data structure alongside ISO grading, helping manufacturers identify formatting errors before products leave the factory. Setup and operation are simplified through a guided calibration wizard and a browser-based WebLink interface, enabling configuration, monitoring, and diagnostics without additional software.

The VHV5 builds on OMRON’s decades-long leadership in barcode verification technologies trusted across regulated industries worldwide.
