Omron and iLumen strengthen their unique offer against PID

After the huge investments sustained in the past years in Europe to build up new PV plants, the cumulated installation reached today the remarkable result of 81.4 GW counting for the 58% of the installations worldwide. (source: EPIA report 2014)

Your problem: PID reduces power output

Now the times are mature for the PV business to interrogate on a fundamental question: are the sustained investments generating the estimated revenues?

Sometimes the reply is “Yes” but some other times unexpected or initially underestimated issues threaten the yield of operating PV plants. This happens for example when PID (Potential Induced Degradation) affects and degrades the PV panels: an in-depth study published by Fraunhofer Center for Silicon Photovoltaics found that after just a few years of service PID reduces the power output of a solar park by as much as 70%.

Our solution: the Mini PID box

In partnership with iLumen, we deliver a retrofit solution to re-generate PID directly in field, thus avoiding costly PV modules replacement.

The Mini PID box, available as indoor or outdoor model, can quickly regenerate panels, without affecting the inverter and any loss of yield. This plug and play solution, compatible with all string sizes, is the perfect solution for medium and large scale projects; with 2 independent inputs accepting up to 20A each, one unit of Mini PID box is able to re-generate up to 4 strings (in case of common polycrystalline technology) and up to two MPPTs at once.

An optimum recovery is achieved by guaranteeing the equipotentiality to ground between the Mini PID box and the metal frame of the PV modules. Furthermore, an integrated patented algorithm applies a unique learning curve that tunes the recovery operations with respect to the degradation status of the connected PV modules, measured with internal current and voltage sensors.

As a pure re-generation tool, Mini PID box can be installed just temporarily at the PV plant only if in conjunction with other countermeasures which prevent PID from happening again, like our KP100L inverter, otherwise removing the Mini PID box will cause PID to re-appear.

“iLumen constitutes a selected partner for Omron in PID business”, declared Mr Akira Enami, Environmental Solution Business Manager of Omron Europe, “the combination of mutual competences and products will help the PV plant maintainer, the asset managers and the plant owners, to effectively and smoothly solve the problem of PID.”
